Worth Knowing

The small jobs that cost more when they wait

Most of what a plumber does is unglamorous: taps, cisterns, valves, mixers, waste connections. These are worth attending to precisely because they are cheap now. A running cistern is a small repair and a noticeable line on a water bill; a corroded isolator is a small repair until it fails and takes out the whole supply.

The other reason to deal with them is diagnostic. A tap that will not stop dripping in an older home is often the first visible sign that the supply pipework behind it is deteriorating, and that is much better to know early.

Everyday work this covers

  • Taps, mixers and cartridges
  • Toilet cisterns, inlet valves and flush mechanisms
  • Isolation and stop valves
  • Waste traps, wastes and connections
  • Washing machine and dishwasher connections
  • Outside taps and garden lines

Small signs worth mentioning when you book

  • Water discolouration when a tap is first opened
  • Pressure that has dropped gradually over months
  • A tap that has become stiff or noisy
  • Damp in a cupboard under a sink

If two or three separate small faults have appeared in a short space of time in an older property, they are often one underlying problem rather than three coincidences. Mention them together rather than one at a time.

Common questions

Is it worth calling out a plumber for one dripping tap?

There is no call-out fee, so the visit costs nothing and you get a price before anything is done. Grouping a few small jobs into one visit is the most economical way to handle them.

My water pressure has dropped across the whole house.

Whole-house pressure loss usually points to the supply side rather than an individual fitting — a partially closed main, a failing pressure valve, or corroded galvanised pipe narrowing the bore.

Can you fit isolation valves so I can do small repairs myself?

Yes, and it is a sensible request. Isolators on each branch mean future work does not require shutting off the whole property.
